I recently learned via witness, that when loosely tempered sugar departs from the edge of a table it relinquishes its color. It softens its boundaries in one final push to take up space, before shifting quickly – a tender sigh. Sliding over the lip it finds itself awash in an unfamiliar transparency. It seems transformations like these, are rarely seen and always felt. 

I envy the ease with which this humectant body turns itself over to such a state of relinquishment. With a gentle kiss, it departs, leaning into the rupture; leaving me to wonder what it hopes to find within its own obliteration. Perhaps there is something to be said for the potency of such an encounter – in seeing oneself stretched so tightly.

Unable to hold its own form, gravity forces the material to renounce its edges and give in to the pressure. The drip is slow; steady and dedicated. If I let it, it would drip forever. Hours of shape-shifting release made visible, active, and I had an intense desire to image it. So, I watched. For hours I watched. I settled my body in the perfect position to simultaneously witness the stream of liquid sugar and its digital counterpart, slicing through the center of my phone screen.

 A kind of double presence, which seems to mirror my own. This collapse is also mine.
